All documents originating from external sources, including texts, images and maps, have been or are in the process of being edited in accordance with copyright and technical requirements. In the case of text documents, this includes editing of the format and content, and correction of linguistic and factual errors. In the case of images, editing refers to cropping and size reduction so that the resulting image represents only a smaller fragment of the original one, thereby conforming to the fair use clause of the Copyright Law. In the case of maps, editing refers to enhancements including additional information and interactive features such as embedded image display and map links. In many cases, original documents have not only been edited as described above, but also merged, thereby creating new documents (html files) containing texts, images and maps from various sources which are indicated according to available information.
NOTE REGARDING PHOTO CREDITS & COPYRIGHT
The question of copyright relating to photographic documents has an added level of complexity as a result of the often overlooked issue of the subject copyright, which refers to the rights of the individuals being photographed, or whose property is being photographed, and which may arise in certain cases depending on the subject matter of the photographs. This issue is particularly sensitive in the case of indigenous peoples when their traditional cultural values and beliefs relating to being photographed are taken into account. In light of this, it would therefore be advisable for photographers operating in such circumstances to take these factors into account when claiming copyright, as it is their responsibility to respect subject copyright and to ensure that subject consent has been properly obtained.
